Shelby Police Reports (2024)

Warrant service, May 17, 1:03 p.m., E. Second St, Shelby Police Department received a call from the Richland County Sheriffs Office stating that they had a female with a warrant out of our jurisdiction. An officer responded and took the female into custody, transporting her to the Shelby City Jail where she posted bond.

Property damage, May 18, 3:47 p.m., Pine, Shelby Police Department received a call from a male stating that his neighbor got paint on his house siding and wanted something done about it. Officers responded and the neighbors worked out the situation with no issues.

Domestic violence, May 18, 7:59 p.m., Lynn, Officers were dispatched to the listed location for a report of a Domestic Violence Incident. Upon arrival officers met with both the suspect and the victim. The suspect admitted to throwing objects but denied any physical altercation between the two. The victim's story was similar to the suspect however the victim stated the suspect became physical. During the investigation police observed red marks on the victim where she claimed she was assaulted. Due to the evidence the suspect was placed under arrest for Domestic Violence and transported to Richland County Jail. The suspect was given a court date.

Juvenile complaint, May 18, 5:06 p.m., N. Gamble., Officers were dispatched to a child in the roadway in the area of N. Gamble and Whitney. The callers were able to secure the little boy from getting hit by traffic . When Officers made contact, the child was partially nude having only a shirt on and nothing else. The child was transported to the Shelby Police Department and Richland County Children Services was contacted. After an hour of checking the area and knocking on doors, the mother of the child was observed running from the address of N. Gamble. The mother had left the child in the fathers care while she was away from the home. Contact with the father was made. The father became irate and was detained by Officers. It was determined that the father was asleep when the child exited the home and he had no idea where the child was. While speaking to the father his eyes were observed to be red, blood shot and glossy. He appeared to be confused and continued to repeat himself to Officers. The odor of an alcohol beverage was coming from and about his person. The father continued to deny being responsible for the child running into the roadway. After several warning to stop yelling and causing a scene, the father was arrested for child endangering and transported to Richland County Jail. After speaking with police, it was determined that he had been at this address two days prior for the same type of call. The mother came to the Shelby Police Department where she spoke with Richland County Children Services. It was determined that the child was able to be released to the mother as long as the father had no contact with the child.

Burglary, May 18, 11:45 p.m., High School, Officers were detailed to High School Ave, in reference to a Burglary.

Disturbance, May 19, 3:11 p.m., Buckeye, On the listed date and time the police department responded to the listed location for a possible Domestic Violence Incident between the victim and suspect. The victim currently had her two children, their partners and their young children living within the household. The victim and suspect were arguing and the suspect alleged that the victim threw a toy that struck one of the children. The suspect subsequently threw the toy back at the victim. No injuries were observed and the victim declined to be a cooperating victim. Attempts were made to have the suspect and her children leave the residence for awhile to calm down, but the suspect refused. Both the victim and suspect were counseled on multiple topics and both calmed down and agreed to stop arguing.

Neighbor trouble, May 19, 7:13 p.m., E. Smiley, Due to a neighbor's trouble, an officer was called to the location on the stated date and time. Dispatch informed the officer that the caller arrived home when another neighbor, with whom the caller was not supposed to have contact, charged at her. When the officer arrived at the complex, he spoke to the caller. The caller explained that she was walking up the stairs when the other person came up from behind and almost knocked her down. The person elbowed her , causing her to lose her balance, and she ended up with a bruise on her left hand from catching herself. The officer then spoke with the other person, who explained that she was heading up the stairs and that the caller stopped on the stairs to let her go by. She claimed that she did not touch the caller at all. No one at the apartment complex witnessed the incident. The caller expressed her desire to pursue an assault charge against the other person. She was advised that the case would be forwarded to the law director for review.

Animal complaint, May 20, 7:51 a.m., State Route 39, A concerned citizen contacted the police department to report an injured deer that was unable to walk next to the listed location. Upon arrival police observed a small deer that was bleeding from its mouth and unable to stand up. It appeared the deer was struck on the roadway. The deer appeared to be suffering from its injuries. Police removed the deer from the paved portion of the property and placed it in the yard. Police destroyed the deer by utilizing their cruisers shotgun and one slug round. The departments list for deer carcass recovery was utilized and an individual arrived at the scene and removed the deer. He was provided with a Deer Carcass Receipt.

Family dispute, May 20, 2:28 a.m., Woodland, The listed complainant called and advised that the subject was inside the residence punching walls and causing a disturbance. The complainant requested that an officer come standby while the subject gathered his belongings and left. As police approached the residence police observed a pickup truck leaving the area. As police pulled up to the residence the complainant was standing outside awaiting my arrival. Police spoke with the complainant who stated that nothing physical occurred, she just wanted the male told he could not return. The complainant provided police with an order from 2023 that granted her exclusive occupancy of the residence and primary custodian of the children. The complainant stated that she wanted the order enforced, citing that he should not be allowed back at the residence. Officers spoke with the subject and advised him of the order. It was explained that the order was not clear on certain things and that officers were going to try and verify the order on 5/20/24. Police advised the subject that it would be in his best interest to stay elsewhere for the night or until some questions could be answered as to whether or not he is permitted to be at the residence. The subject agreed to leave and not return until he knew the outcome.

Juvenile complaint, May 21, 6:45 p.m., N. Gamble, The Shelby Police Department received a report of a young juvenile walking near the roadway on N. Gamble Street. The juvenile had been brought inside before officers could arrive, however contact was made with the family.

Property damage, May 23, 1:08 p.m., Broadway, Shelby Police Department received a call from a male stating that his tire had been "slashed." Officers answered the call and took a report. At this time there is a possible suspect that will be followed up on.

Crash/hit skip, May 23, 4:25 p.m., Championship, The owner of the listed vehicle was umpiring a high school baseball game at the baseball field located at the complex when his vehicle was sideswiped. The driver of the second vehicle failed to notify anyone or leave any type of notification on the vehicle. The owners vehicle was parked at the southwest portion of the lot. Police observed the listed vehicle, a silver 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan, had scuffs and scratch marks on the mid to lower portion of the passenger side that extended down the length of the vehicle. The owner verified that there was no damage on the vehicle prior to the game. The driver provided proof of insurance.

Telephone harassment, May 24, 7:33 p.m., Broadway, Officers were dispatched to the listed location for a report of a possible Protection Order Violation. Upon arrival officers met with the victim who stated that she believes her ex -boyfriend is messaging her via a new number. The victim does currently have an active Protection Order against the suspect. Officers observed the messages where the victim explained that they are similar to messages her ex -boyfriend has sent in the past. At this time there is no evidence or indication that the number is attached to the suspect.

Menacing, May 24, 9:29 p.m., Flint, Officers were dispatched to the listed location for a follow -up investigation that was later determined to be a menacing incident. Police met with the victim who stated that that several weeks ago he and the suspect had gotten into an argument. The victim stated that the suspect then pulled a firearm on the victim and pointed it at him. Police will attempt a follow up with the suspect.
