When it comes to great horror movies, there are plenty out there that are amazing. Some are incredibly suspenseful, and others that can make you think about your way of life or have deeper meanings, like Ari Aster’s Hereditary or Midsommar. And then there are some that just want to boggle your mind – and that is where the Saw franchise comes in.

Saw was created by James Wan and Leigh Whannel, and introduced us to modern-day horror movie villain, Jigsaw, otherwise known as John Kramer. For nine movies, this franchise has tested the limits of what can go on a movie screen, using different forms of psychological torture for the characters – and now, it’s getting its tenth movie, Saw X, as indicated on our upcoming horror movies list.

But, what can fans look forward to with this movie? Who is going to be starring in it? If you’re just as interested as I am, here is what we know so far about Saw X.

What Is The Saw X Release Date?

Saw X: Release Date, Trailer, Cast, And Other Things We Know About The Upcoming Sequel (2)

Mark your 2023 movie schedules, as Saw X is releasing on September 29, 2023, according to Deadline. Originally, the film was set to come out in October but was moved up.

2023 has already been a great year for horror with the latest M. Night Shyamalan movie A Knock At The Cabin, as well as the sixth installment in the Scream franchise among the 2023 horror movie releases so far. Saw 10 eventually being among them just adds to the fun. I can’t wait to see what Saw X is going to add to these new horror movies.

Tobin Bell Is Returning As Jigsaw

Reported by The Hollywood Reporter in October 2022, it was confirmed that Tobin Bell, who has been playing the actual face behind Jigsaw, John Kramer, since the original Saw, is going to be coming back to play the role.

Now, this is news that everyone should be celebrating, since he wasn’t even in the most recent Saw installment, Spiral. It starred Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, and only featured a photo of Bell.

The producers of the franchise, Mark Burg and Oren Koules, talked about how excited they were to have him back when it was announced by THR (in the article above in October 2022) that Tobin Bell was returning:

What a thrill to be reuniting with Tobin. His performance as John Kramer is part of the magic that made this franchise a phenomenon and his character is an active part of this film.

Bell has done plenty in the world of movies and television besides Saw, such as roles in movies like Manson Family Vacation, In the Line of Fire, and so much more, but it’s always cool to see him come back to a role that so many people know him for.

Shawnee Smith Is Coming Back

For the longest time, it was rumored that fan favorite, Shawnee Smith, might be coming back to the Saw franchise, and it’s since been confirmed that Shawnee Smith is indeed returning to play Amanda Young, according to an official Twitter post from the Saw page.

Good to see you again, Amanda. pic.twitter.com/uwTp9yorGkJuly 30, 2023

What exciting news, and it’s awesome to see that she’s going to return.

Several Other Actors Are Confirmed

Besides Bell returning, and Smith coming back, there have been several casting announcements. There haven’t been any character names revealed just yet, but many actors have been brought forward as part of the film. In an early December 2022 Deadline article, several other actors are confirmed to appear in Saw X.

These include Synnøve Macody Lund (Riviera), Steven Brand (The Sandman), and Michael Beach (Tulsa King), all of whom have had very successful past years. But several other actors have been announced as well.

In another Deadline article from December 2022, four other actors have been announced – Renata Vaca, Paulette Hernandez, Joshua Okamoto, and Octavio Hinojosa.

Again, character details are unknown at this time, but it looks like this is already going to be a cast full of talent from all over, and I, for one, can’t wait to see what they do with their roles.

Saw X Follows John Between Saw I And II, While Looking For A Cure For His Cancer

Saw X: Release Date, Trailer, Cast, And Other Things We Know About The Upcoming Sequel (7)

If you were wondering what Saw X could entail considering we have both the original Jigsaw and Shawnee Smith back as Amanda, we have some details. According to the press site for the film, the movie is going to be set between Saw I and Sawn II.

Saw X is going to follow John Kramer (a.k.a. Jigsaw) as he travels to Mexico for an experimental medical procedure that could cure his cancer, as if it was a miracle. But when he arrives, he discovers that it’s all a scam to prey on the weak. Kramer decides to take things into his own hands with revenge, and takes out the criminals one by one through his horrifying traps.

Talk about an interesting story. And don’t worry about the film not being bloody. The producers were quick to confirm that the movie, according to a Variety article in August 2022, will capture the hearts of fans, as well as “other body parts,” with brand new traps that people have never seen. Saw always seems to find the best ways to up their horror every single movie, so this isn’t that surprising.

Kevin Gruetert Directed Saw X

For those who are wondering who is going to be directing the next installment, Saw X is being helmed by Kevin Greutert, as reported by the Variety article in August 2022. For fans of the franchise, the name might sound familiar, as he actually directed both Saw VI and Saw 3D, and edited several of the Saw films prior.

It's especially fun to see that he is going to be returning, because Greutert has worked on several other films since those directorial efforts, including Jessabelle, Visions, and Jackals, and to have him back in the directors chair is always a great time.

Filming Completed In February 2023

Saw X: Release Date, Trailer, Cast, And Other Things We Know About The Upcoming Sequel (9)

According to the Deadline article that talks about Shawnee Smith possibly coming back as well as other casting, the movie was in production in December 2022. Filming has since come to an end.

In a tweet that Kevin Greutert released on X (formerly Twitter), he confirmed that they had wrapped filming on the tenth sequel on February 10th, 2023. He revealed that it was hard to film the movie, but that it was all worth it in the end and that the cast and crew were outstanding.

Just wrapped shooting on Saw X, and though the challenges were huge (easy films are rarely worthwhile in the end), it was one of the most rewarding and epic experiences of my life. Cast and crew were firing on all cylinders, pic.twitter.com/uTMH7YzcfIFebruary 10, 2023

With so much information, Saw fans are truly bursting at the seams in order to get to the movie theaters and watch this next entry. But we all must be patient and wait for the end of September. Until then, try and see if you can figure out some of the craziest puzzles in the Saw franchise.
