FAQ – Delta Early Start (2024)

Most dual enrollment courses are offered in-person. However, we also offer fully online classes under dual enrollment. Please check with your school counselor about the delivery method of your classes.Online classes are delivered via Canvas (a learning management system).

To access your online class(es), refer to How to Log into Canvas.Please keep in mind that you may not be able to access your Canvas course until the start date. Not all instructors open the classes before the start of the term.

Do not delay logging on and participating! Lack of going to class and participating in discussions and submitting assignments will result in your being dropped from the course by the instructor, without notice.

Delta online courses are asynchronous. There are no required in-person or live Zoom meetings. The only exception to holding live meetings is for courses with hands-on labs or performance arts practice sessions.

Your instructors may choose to hold Zoom lectures, but have been asked to make them optional and record them for your later viewing.

You will read or view lectures, take tests/quizzes, participate in discussions, etc. in your Canvas classroom(s). Plan and schedule time to ‘go’ to class regularly, complete assignments, and participate. There are open and close dates to assignments and strict due deadlines. Do not miss them. These are college courses and your grades will affect your GPA and college transcripts.

You should also download the Canvas Mobile app to check into the class more frequently for updates on grades, due dates and messages. See FAQ #7.

Weekly office hours in Zoom may be scheduled to questions raise concerns. You may also reach out to your instructor via the InBox (mail) of Canvas.

Delta College has adopted a single sign-on service (Okta) which you will use to log into Canvas, your email, and Office 365 apps.

To access your online class, you need to log intoCanvas. You may not be able to access your online course until the start date. Please check your course’s start date in the Schedule of Classes to verify when it begins.

How to Log into Canvas

1. Go to:https://deltacollege.okta.com/
2. Log-in using your OKTAusername and password
   • Username Example:if your Delta Student Email Address isjsmith123@mustangs.deltacollege.edu, your Username will be:jsmith123
3. Enter your OKTA password.
4. Once you log into OKTA, you will be able to access Canvas.

Canvas will appear there as a tile you can click on to enter Canvas, like this:

You may log into Canvas 10 days before the start of classes. Keep in mind that you may not see your course on the Dashboard until the first day of the class (as per Schedule).

Most instructors will not open class access until the first day of classes. Unless notified by your professors that they will open courses early (thus the importance of checking your Delta email), log into Canvas to start coursework on the first day of classes.

• Not all instructors send out welcome messages, but you are expected to log into the course on the first day of classes. Failure to log on and participate actively may result in your being dropped from the course.

• You can find out what your Delta email address is by logging into your account inMyDelta >> Profile Icon >> Contact Details.

Read the syllabus carefully and find out how you can contact your instructor.

• The majority of instructors ask that you contact them with questions via the Canvas in-box. See “How to I send a message in Canvas as a student?“
• Others may expect you to email them in their Delta email (see syllabus).
• Your instructors may also have set up a forum under Discussions in the Canvas course for general course questions. This way, everyone can learn from answers to other classmates’ questions.

Studentscan access Canvas from any browser on your Android/iOS device.However, mobile browsers are not supported, and features may not function as expected comparedto viewing Canvas in a fully supported desktop or laptop browser.

If you need to use Canvas on your mobile phone device, you should download and install the “Canvas Student Mobile App”.

Course requirements and expectations will be clearly outlined by each faculty member at the beginning of the class. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are able to meet the standards set for a college level course.

It is worth noting that the grades you earn while taking Dual Enrollment and College Early Start courses will be added to your official college transcript. It is a good idea to assess your ability to be successful in the course at the start of the term and drop early, if needed, as to not affect your college transcripts.

A student may also discuss dropping with the instructor who MAY provide assistance in dropping.

Reminder:It is the student’s responsibility to drop a course – including knowing the dates for dropping without a “W” as well as to drop without a grade (but with a “W”).

First, you should discuss the situation with your instructor.

If you would like to request a change of grade, you will need to complete the Petition for Change to Academic Record Formand send it to:

• Please provide your name andbdayto look up if you are inMyDelta. Perhaps you are set up but never received the email.
• If you are not in the system, please provide a screenshot of the confirmation number that you received when you applied and contactAdmissions.

How to Log into MyDelta

1. Go to:https://deltacollege.okta.com/
2. Log-in using your OKTAusername and password
   • Username Example:if your Delta Student Email Address isjsmith123@mustangs.deltacollege.edu, your Username will be:jsmith123
3. Enter your OKTA password.
4. Once you log on, click on the MyDelta tile.

If at all possible, please assist your parent/guardian to get a gmail or yahoo email account.

Alternatively, you may enter your email address, but include your parent’s / guardian’s full name. The confirmation email for the parent will come to your email, once you complete and submit the form. Call your parent/guardian over to sign the form and click on Finish.

It will then go to your High School Official Designee for the final signature.

No, no assessment tests are required.If you will enroll inEnglish 1A or Math 12, youmust requestthat the Placement Centerclear your level.

Pleasewaituntil your CES form is processed prior to submitting your request.

• • Request to be cleared for English 1A and/or Math/Stats

You will be notified via email once you are cleared.

If you are currently taking English 1A, you can go ahead and enroll in English 1B for next term. The system will allow you to enroll.

However, prior to the start of next term’s classes, Admissions runs a check against grades. If you did not pass with a C or better, you will get dropped from English 1B.

The are no costs associated with courses under the dual enrollment program, so you will not need financial aid.

You may use financial aid for courses under the College Early Start program; nonetheless, financial aid has eligibility limits that might affect the student once he graduates from high school and wants to attend college as an adult. Students and parents should consider the pros and cons of using financial aid while the student is still in high school.

To enroll in the Delta College Dual Enrollment Program, you must:

1. 1. Be age 13 and older.
   2. Be enrolled in the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade.
   3. Be attending a high school that is participating in the Dual Enrollment Program with Delta.
   4. Complete a College Early Start form with high school counselor and obtain all required signatures from parent and school designee.

Dual Enrollment courses are taken on high school campuses and are geared towards college transfer and career readiness. Course options are selected by your school.Through Dual Enrollment, you are a Delta college student on an accelerated path to a degree or certificate!

Students from districts who are dual enrollment partners with Delta College are not required to be in any special academic programs to take the dual enrollment courses. All students in good standing with the high school may enroll.

• Courses are free – you don’t have to pay for any fees, tuition, textbooks or classroom / lab materials.
• You take classes on your high school campus, ideal for those that are not able to get to the Delta campus.
• Dual enrollment courses are not open to the public. Only students within the same high school district may register.
• Save money! Dual enrollment can shorten a college trajectory by at least 1 year and save $5,324.
• You may register for up to 15 units per term.

If you are taking dual enrollment courses, you will not incur any costs for textbooks or classroom materials, nor any tuition and fees.

High school pupils enrolled in courses offered through a CCAP (dual enrollment) agreement to high schools shall not be assessed or charged a fee prohibited by EC § 49011, including a fee charged to a pupil, or a pupil’s parent or guardian, as a condition for course registration or for textbooks, supplies, materials, and equipment needed to participate in the course. EC §§ 49010 et seq.; 76004(f) .

The above applies only to dual enrollment courses. If you are enrolled in Delta College courses open to all students (not just to your high school), you are responsible for the cost of textbooks. Effective fall 2020, you will not be charged any tuition or fees, however.

Delta College waives tuition and fees for high school students at Delta College; however, you may be responsible for the cost of textbooks and classroom supplies, dependent on what classes you enroll in.

• If you are taking regular Delta classes under College Early Start (CES), you are responsible for the cost of textbooks and classroom materials. Review the course syllabus for required textbooks and supplies.
• If you are a Dual Enrollment Program (DEP) student (i.e. taking courses offered at/for a specific partner DEP high school), you do not need to purchase textbooks. The Regional Education office at Delta College will loan you textbooks for the semester. Check with your Dual Enrollment Coordinator about the process for receiving your textbook(s).

You may take up to 15 units per semester, pending continued principal or designee approval. Your counselor may recommend that you take fewer units based on assessment of your maturity level and academic readiness.

If you enroll in dual enrollment and other Delta College courses as a College Early Start student, you can take up to 11 units combined per semester.

Your Delta Student ID Card is your official college ID card and gives you free access to the San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD) bus services. You may also get discounts at events when showing a student ID. It is also required for laptop and hotspot loans from Delta College.

Below are the prerequisite(s) for some Delta courses commonly taken by high school students. This list is not exhaustive. Always review a course’s description in the Catalog for any prereqs before attempting to enroll. Prerequisites must be fully met; Admissions cannot grant conditional clearance for the below in-progress courses.

Delta College’s Disability Support Programs and Services are available to all Delta College students with a verified disability. To begin receiving services, complete the steps below. If you are new to Delta College, your first step to receiving services is to apply and enroll at the College.

1. You can schedule your appointment by calling (209) 954-5151, ext. 6272 or visit the DSPS Service Counter in the DeRicco Student Services Building, 1st Floor, Room 110 (on the other side of the Delta Connect Center). Appointments are scheduled up to two weeks in advance. Once that day’s appointments are full, you are encouraged to call back the following business day.
2. Scheduling Appointments Counselors see students with scheduled appointments. Drop-ins are available for quick questions, based on Counselor availability and are subject to change
3. New students must check-in 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment time to complete a pre-intake packet. Documentation must be shown to staff at time of check-in to proceed with the scheduled intake. Students who do not bring disability verification to intake appointment will be rescheduled to a later date.
